How to Avoid an Accident While Driving You've probably heard the statistics about the dangers of texting and driving. You know that it can make your car less safe and lead to more traffic accidents. But you've probably also heard that cellphones aren't allowed in cars while driving. And yet, drivers still use them! If you're part of that group -- or if you just want to avoid being involved in a crash because distracted driving took place -- there are some steps you can take to stay safe before getting behind the wheel. A recent survey by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety revealed that one in five drivers have used their cellphone while driving within the last 30 days. The foundation also found that among those who admit to distracted driving, 55 percent say they use a cellphone, 10 percent report eating and drinking, and 9 percent say they've been distracted by passengers.
